Resumo

The present work is based on one of the chapters from the Master’s dissertation presented at the Physical Education Post Graduation Program from the Federal University of Pelotas in the Research Field on Memory, Body and Sport, called “Histories from the Turnen at the Leopoldenser Turnverein (São Leopoldo Gymnastics Society – Sociedade de Ginástica de São Leopoldo)”. Through it we noitce that little is known about the existence of the now extinct Rio Grande do Sul German Gymnastics Leaguel. In this work, we aim to present a small and brief history of this institution, sob in the gaucho social, sport and cultural context from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. As theoretical-methodological reference we considered some assumptions of the Cultural History. The Rio Grande do Sul Gymnastics German League was a gathering institution of several partner societies, being a supporter of the German Brazilian culture. It guided the turnen in RS. Several sports events were organized, among them the Turnfeste and the Gauturnfeste. This competitions were remarkable the turnen peak period in RS. Its extinction/end happened in the end of the 1930s, when there was a nationalization policy in the Getúlio Vargas government.
