Child Corporal Culture: school, media and art mediations

Ingrid Dittrich Wiggers

Abstract

This paper analyses representations and corporal expressions of children between 7 and 9 years old. Starting from the concept of corporeity, a fundamental element of the human development, as the dimension built with the broad process of social interaction. School and media are compared and indicated as significant agents. With the aim of knowing the children’s response to this process, we carried out a field inquiry with some students from a Escola-Parque (Park-School), in Brasilia, during the year of 2001. We integrated to the research some of the activities of the school, where Arts and Physical Education were taught. We followed the subjects through cartoons, theater, games, music and dance. We noticed that, although the school and the media filter the view of the children, art enhance the production of other corporal images.
